WORLD : Russia will not stop if it wins the war in Ukraine, the US ambassador to the UK has told Sky News.
Speaking to Sky News presenter Kay Burley from her official residence in central London last week, Jane Hartley said she is “optimistic” that the US will release more funding for Ukraine, but said “anybody who thinks that Russia may stop after this, I think is wrong”.
“I was ambassador (to France and Monaco) in 2014, and I saw what happened in Crimea. I don’t know why anybody would say, ‘oh this is it for Russia‘,” she said.
“Democracy, I think, is at stake. So we need to support Ukraine.”
Ms Hartley added that “these are difficult days” after Burley asked if she felt an atmosphere “almost comparable” to that last seen before the Second World War.
She then said that “we want to do everything we can to make sure Ukraine is still a strong democracy and that Russia loses this war”.
It would be easy to dismiss Ambassador Hartley’s claim that Russia will continue on the offensive if it overwhelms Ukraine. It could simply be seen as a cynical attempt by Washington to drum up more military support for Kiev.
However, it would be a big mistake to do so. There are a number of reasons for this. First and foremost, the threat to its sovereignty that Russia perceives as emanating from Ukraine did not originate there.
That threat has its roots further West and Putin knows this. The Western elites have simply used Ukraine and Ukrainians as proxies in a long-term plan to fragment the constituent parts of the Russian Federation and turn them against each other.
Using the principle of divide and rule the objective was to neutralize the threat the Western powers see as emerging from Russia.
In addition, fragmenting the Russian Federation would open the way for various oligarchs, both from the West and Russia, to move in and exploit the Russian Federation’s vast natural resources.
For Washington and London it was a winning strategy. All they had to do was install a puppet president in Kiev.
Vlodymyer Zelensky, a TV actor who was best know for playing the role of Ukrainian president in Servant of the People was perfect for the part.
Thereafter, following the 2014 coup, the West spent billions building up and preparing the Ukrainian armed forces to take on Russia.
Russia could see the threat that was emerging on its Western border and that is why it launched its Special Operation in Feb 2022. So if Ambassador Jane Hartley is correct, the West will only have itself to blame if Russia’s military campaign doesn’t grind to a halt. That’s because Putin will want to deal with the threat to Russia’s sovereignty once and for all.
