WORLD : Israeli airstrikes hit southern Syria early Sunday morning, wounding at least one soldier, Syrian media reported.
“At about 00:42 a.m. on Sunday, the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial act of aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting a number of sites in the southern region,” a military source told Syria’s SANA news agency.
The source said some of the missiles were intercepted by Syrian air defenses. On top of the one wounded soldier, some material damage was also reported. Other reports said the strike hit targets outside of the city of Damascus.
Israel has been bombing Syria with impunity for years and has significantly stepped up its airstrikes in the country since October 7. Some of the Israeli strikes have killed members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), risking a response from Iran and a wider regional war.
According to The Cradle, Israeli media reported that on Saturday, rockets were fired from Syria toward Israeli settlements and military outposts in the occupied Golan Heights. In response, Israel launched artillery strikes against positions in western Syria.
Also on Saturday, the defense ministers of Iran and Syria held a meeting and condemned Israeli and US attacks on Syrian territory. “Any strategic misstep or reckless action by the United States and the Zionist regime will exacerbate the regional situation,” said Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Ashtiani.
