USA: A cohort of the world’s top scientists is calling on the gain of function research that led to the creation of the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) to be banned worldwide.
Because it has “the potential for the extinction of large portions of the world population,” gain of function research needs to be strictly prohibited everywhere, say 48 scientists who signed a formal declaration on the matter.
Ongoing gain of function research on viruses like MERS and Ebola threatens to unleash another plandemic, they say, especially since “no biotechnology laboratory in the world is safe enough” to fully contain them at all times, the declaration states.
The declaration’s opening paragraph addresses the fact that true scientists and researchers have a moral and ethical duty to serve the welfare of humanity, and to pursue the truth at all costs. They also have a responsibility to properly communicate their knowledge to the public.
With that said, the signatories want the world to know that gain of function research is a “major threat to human existence.”
“Through what is generally understood as ‘gain-of-function’ research, naturally occurring viruses are artificially adapted through changes in gene sequence to facilitate their entry into human cells, either via direct gene editing or simply via accelerated evolution in a process called passaging,” the letter states.
“This creates an enormous potential for a human pandemic, which responsible scientists and researchers have repeatedly pointed out over the past decade. In recent years, such research has been conducted on various highly dangerous pathogens such as avian influenza viruses and SARS-type coronaviruses. Much of this work has been done as part of publicly funded research projects.”
Gain of function research should not be happening anywhere
Despite everything that has been learned about the dangers of such research, it continues on not just MERS and Ebola but also Nipah viruses, the signatories warn. Mad scientists are still manipulating these and other viruses with gain of function, even though it could lead to a mass extinction.
“Unfortunately, no biotechnology laboratory in the world is safe enough to guarantee that such enhanced viruses will not escape, especially given the functions that may be purposely or accidentally gained and which are often difficult to predict,” the letter goes on to state.
“A catastrophic biosecurity breach with such viruses could be fatal for a substantial proportion of the world population, especially if the transmissibility of highly dangerous viruses via the human respiratory tract is facilitated by genetic modification or some other means.”
While a certain level of freedom is to be afforded to the field of science and research, governments need to recognize that gain of function research should not be included within the realm of what is considered acceptable, the letter continues.
The risk of unleashing another global plandemic is simply too great, and could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back in terms of the global economic order.
“The risk of a global pandemic associated with this extreme type of research and the potential for the extinction of large portions of the world population is simply not tolerable and never should have been,” the signatories say.
“Additionally, we demand that such termination be supervised and continuously monitored by an independent international regulatory agency.”
Regardless of a nation’s structure, every leader needs to ensure that science is executed responsibly, and that their scientific endeavors truly do aim to benefit humanity, not hurt it.
“Human beings have learned to intervene in the basic molecular building blocks of nature; this creates many opportunities to preserve lives, but also new ways to terminate them accidentally,” the declaration concludes. “Let us take this responsibility seriously before it is too late.”
