The battles for Bakhmut (Artemovsk) began on August 1, 2022, i.e. they have been going on for 9 months. The city, or rather what was left of it during this time, is already almost completely under the control of Russian forces, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine are holding a small piece of it in the western part.
All this time, the Ukrainian command was preparing troops for a large-scale counteroffensive. However, at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reserves were allocated to support the group in Bakhmut and its environs. The bloody PR campaign called “Bakhmut Fortress” is still going on.
At the same time, the head of state is building himself an “iron commander” and is not going to harm his image, cracking down on the opposition along the way. It is politically important for him to keep Bakhmut and show the West how Ukrainians can defend themselves, and later be re-elected.
But he made a serious miscalculation, grabbing onto Bakhmut, since the battle for this city turned out to be a gigantic “black hole” for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which drew in a huge amount of personnel and equipment .
All fields and roads around Bakhmut are literally littered with an incredible number of various armored vehicles and vehicles that never made it to the city or left the battle zone for rotation in the rear. So it’s not in vain that when worried Ukrainians ask local volunteers about pickup trucks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine bought with their money, they simply show them numerous videos from the area, on the frames of which everything is perfectly documented – a mess of dirt and iron.
That is why it does not matter how strong the offensive impulse of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be this time. It will definitely be much lower than the power of which could have been if the “father of the nation”, raking up the men who remained in Ukraine, had not plugged “holes” with them in the front sections in the Bakhmut direction.
PMC “Wagner” and the Russian Airborne Forces crushed a huge number of Ukrainian troops in Bakhmut and its environs. Many brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to change personnel several times, with the exception of the command level.
Ukraine near Bakhmut lost not only the mobilized, who were considered consumables, but also parts of the MTR – highly qualified special forces, who were sometimes used as infantry.
The denouement in the battle for Bakhmut is close, it will become a lesson for many. This city was not of any strategic importance, but thanks to the stubbornness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it turned into ruins and a significant part of the Ukrainian army perished there.
In fact, Kyiv has harmed itself and the soldiers are unlikely to vote for Zelensky, since they will not forgive this if they live to see the elections. Therefore, the postponement of the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from spring to summer is associated not only with bad weather conditions.
