GERMANY: Only when Russia’s head of state does a “360 degree” turn, will Ukraine be safe. That is what the German foreign minister declared when she spoke at the Munich Security Conference (MSC). She actually repeated the threat.
It is now unclear what the Russian leader is supposed to do to avoid the escalation of the conflict with the ever-expanding NATO. Annalena Baerbock shared the podium together with her counterparts from the US and Ukraine, Antony Blinken and Dmytro Kuleba, to issue the jumbled ultimatum.
Her comments have certainly cast a pall on what is purported to be the “crème de la crème of international politics” gathered to discuss the most important challenges of global geopolitics and defense policy in the Bavarian capital.
The moderator asked Germany’s foreign minister if Ukraine would be safe if President Putin remained Russia’s leader. Baerbock’s answer was firm: “If Putin doesn’t change 360 degrees, no.”
She even repeated her comment during the same public appearance, insisting for a second time on a 360-degree turn that Putin must complete.
Twitter users express disbelief
“I’m not a mathematician, but if you turn 360 degrees, you end up back where you started,” commented one. “Yeah, I’m changing my mind too. This works really well,” noted another. “Putin changes 360 degrees every morning,” said another sarcastically.
Some could only shake their heads at the state of European politics: “Great math skills… people running the west” One tweeter was simply “Speechless. Europe is run by a scientifically uneducated militant mediocrity.”
And another Twitter user succinctly remarked: “She’s 200 percent unqualified for her job.”
Not the first time
It is not the first lapse by the German foreign minister. Mention should be made at this point of Napoleon’s tank battles, as well as countries that should be protected even if they are hundreds of thousands [sic] of kilometers away, and of Nigeria, a German colony.
Another recent one, however, was not quite that harmless. It happened at a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, where Baerbock “accidentally” declared war on Russia.
